A flat where the tenant subjected his neighbours to persistent antisocial behaviour and noise nuisance with his late-night visitors has been made the subject of a Premises Closure Order.
Croydon Council secured the three-month Order for 42 Kemerton Road, Addiscombe at hearing at Croydon Magistrates Court on 5 July.
The council took action after residents from Kemerton Road and Jesmond Road complained of noise and disturbances day and night.
The property had been taken over by a number of drug users who had befriended the tenant, who is also a drug user.
Neighbours said young children were scared of going to bed in their own bedroom for fear of being woken up by screaming, shouting and fighting from the property.
One neighbour said that the constant disturbances were having such a detrimental impact on her she could barely function and was beginning to resent living in her home.
Councillor Hamida Ali, cabinet member for safer Croydon and communities
“I am very grateful to the court for granting this Order and relieved for all the residents who have been affected.
“No one should feel fearful and anxious in their own home. This order will bring immediate respite to all those residents who have been suffering at the whim of this tenant and his guests.”
The Closure Order enables the council to secure the property to prevent anyone gaining access.
The council has also applied to the court for a Warrant of Eviction to claim back the property.
